ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE
The Arizona Department of Corrections Health
Care Services is designed to provide offenders access to health
care to meet their medical, dental, and mental health needs.
Health care for offenders is required by Arizona State Statute
A.R.S. 41-1604.01. The 8th and 14th
amendments of the U.S. Constitution further established this
right.
The Health Care Services Program is a managed-care
system, which stresses health care education, primary
prevention, immediate identification of health problems and
early intervention to prevent more debilitating chronic health
problems. Medical units are staffed with nurses and physicians
who provide care 24-hours per day at every institution. Many
sites have x-ray equipment and all draw blood work for
laboratory analysis. Dental care is also available at all sites.
Optometric clinics, orthopedic clinics and surgical clinics are
scheduled at selected sites. Minor surgical procedures can be
performed at all locations. All facilities utilize community
hospitals for emergency care, consultation and in-patient
treatment. Consultation agreements are also in place with
community specialists. Mammography is provided for female
offenders through Mobile On Site Mammography.
Upon entrance to the Arizona Department of
Corrections, offenders receive written and verbal instructions
regarding Health Care Services procedures. A medical assessment is
completed for each offender upon arrival to the RECEPTION
CENTERS listed:
