ADC Health Education Program

Health Education Program

In 1995 the Arizona Department of Corrections initiated a Health Education program specializing in development of educational materials designed to address special educational needs of inmates. That program has evolved into the current Health Services Staff Development and Inmate Health and Wellness Life Skills Education Program.

The current program has grown and continues to grow through partnerships with community organizations, universities, and community colleges. Health Services’ educators are responsible for the design, development, and implementation, coordination and evaluation of health education curriculums and materials. An integral part of the master education plan is responsibility for planning, coordinating, and promoting ongoing inmate/staff health fairs and designated National Health Observances at each of the facilities. Additional responsibilities include planning and coordination of professional training, seminars, and educational resources available to clinical and correctional staff, as well as, exploring grant opportunities and assisting with development of grant proposals.

The emphasis on professionalism and professional development of correctional staff, as well as, the enhancement of inmate education and training programs serves to improve the quality of life through lifestyle changes consistent with wellness and health maintenance.
