GOVERNOR NAMES MILITARY AFFAIRS ADVISER

(September 22, 2004) - PHOENIX - Governor Napolitano today announced Patrick Chorpenning will assume the post as her administration's new Policy Adviser for Military Affairs.  Chorpenning, a retired Marine, has served as the director of the state Department of Veterans' Services since 1999, and was elevated to a cabinet-level position when Gov. Napolitano took office in 2003.

Chorpenning will continue serving as Veterans' Services director, managing the Arizona State Veterans' Home, benefits for state veterans and his other responsibilities while advising the Governor on military issues, including base preservation.  Chorpenning replaces Dion Flynn, who is leaving the office at the end of the year.

Chorpenning retired from the military in 1970 as a result of combat wounds received in Vietnam.  Since then, he has remained actively involved in government and defense-related matters.  He has received honors and awards for his service to Arizona's veterans, and was honored as the Disabled American Veteran of the Year Award - Department of Arizona in 2001.

Chorpenning holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Frostburg State University in Maryland and a master's in education from Harvard University.
