![]() Judge orders prison probe report remain secretPAUL DAVENPORT Associated Press Writer (August 23, 2004) - PHOENIX (AP) A judge on Monday refused to publicly release a grand jury's report on its investigation of the two-week hostage situation at a prison in Buckeye. Presiding Judge Colin Campbell of Maricopa County Superior Court ruled that release of the document would undermine the purpose of both grand juries in general and a continuing criminal investigation in particular. Campbell ruled after reviewing transcripts of the grand jury investigation conducted by Special Prosecutor A. Melvin McDonald Jr. at the request of Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley and Republican legislative leaders. McDonald had asked for permission to release the report. The standoff at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis began Jan. 18 when two inmates took two correctional officers hostage in a guard tower. The inmates, Ricky Wassenaar and Steven Coy, released officer Jason Auch on Jan. 24 but held the other guard, Lois Fraley, until Feb. 1. Both officers were assaulted; Fraley was raped.
