ADC Canine Team Takes First
Place in Tucson

Arizona Department of Corrections canine handlers continue to shine at statewide canine competitions.  At the most recent event, the Tucson Area Police Canine Trials, Correctional Officer Suzette Whitaker of ASPC-Lewis and her dog Paula won first place in the Narcotics Detection competition.

"I heard from one of the judges that we were the only team to find the narcotic on the vehicles without a false alert," Suzette said in an email describing the event.  "There were only two other teams who found the narcotic but they false alerted on a few other vehicles.  The vehicle search was 73 vehicles in ten minutes."

Additionally, ADC canine teams took third place among all competing agencies for narcotics detections.

The event was held November 11, 12 and 13, 2005 at Reid Park in Tucson.  Canine teams were judged in areas such as building and area searches, agility, tactical obedience, handler protection and narcotic and explosive detection.

Competing teams were restricted to full time peace officers, military personnel, or correctional personnel assigned to a K-9 unit with law enforcement duties.  Teams participated from the U.S. Border Patrol, Davis Montham Air Force Base, the Tucson Police Department and the Pima County Sheriff's Office.

Congratulations to Suzette and ADC's other fine canine teams!
