'Pack to School' helps needy Arizona children

From left: Bonnie Roberts of Arizona Correctional Industries Employee Action Committee; AAIII Christine Sosa, ADC event co-chair; Carly Yokoyama, ACI event coordinator; and ESA Heather Price, ADC event co-chair. The four played a key role in organizing ADC’s participation in the Pack to School supply drive, which benefits needy school children throughout Arizona.

Arizona Department of Corrections employees joined other state agencies to support Governor Janet Napolitano’s “Pack to School” supply drive July 13 at the Arizona Capitol.

ADC volunteers met early to load a corrections bus with school supplies donated by department employees before heading to the capitol to participate in the event, which was supported by other state agencies, including Department of Health Services, Department of Transportation and Department of Administration.

Joined by representatives from the Salvation Army, Sleep America, radio station KOOL 94.5 and Harris Printers, Governor Napolitano addressed a crowd of supporters before loading the items onto a school bus with the help of some eager school children.

Key organizers from ADC included co-chairs Christine Sosa and Heather Price, Christina Valenzuela, Virginia Strankman, Laurie Berg, Pamela Evans, Patricia Fuentes, Carly Yokoyama and Lisa Cooper.

The supply drive continues through July 28 and employees are encouraged to contribute. Needed items include: back packs, no. 2 pencils, erasers, paints, spiral notebooks, three-ring binders, crayons, coloring books, rulers, dictionaries, markers, calculators, scissors (blunt), glue sticks, loose leaf paper and thesauri.

Once the drive is complete, Salvation Army will distribute the school supplies to needy students throughout Arizona.
