National Day of Remembrance of Murder Victims
PHOENIX - Governor Janet Napolitano today joined the Arizona chapter of the Parents of Murdered Children, Inc to honor the memories of murder victims today. Speakers today included Governor Napolitano, Attorney General Terry Goddard and Arizona Department of Corrections Director Dora Schriro. Today's memorial began with the ADC honor guard posting the colors of the nation, the state and a special Parents of Murdered Children, Inc. flag.
"These survivors must deal with the devastating impact of murder and its far-reaching effects long after the news fades," the Governor said. "It is important that we never forget your loved ones, the impact they had on your lives, they should never be forgotten."
Governor Napolitano has been a longtime supporter of victims, and supported legislation to bolster the rights of victims and their families. These include:
Legislation that ensures that a free copy of the police report is provided to victims of serious crimes, ensuring statewide uniformity for receiving police reports. "Privileged communication" legislation, which says that a statement made by a sex offender during treatment that leads to a reasonable belief that the person has committed a new sexual offense or an offense of sexual exploitation of children could be admissible against the person in any criminal or juvenile delinquency proceeding. The Governor proclaimed today "National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims" in Arizona.
