Arizona Department of Corrections Celebrates Asian Pacific Heritage Month
ADC honored its Asian Pacific American employees for their achievements and contributions by holding its first ever Asian Pacific recognition ceremony on Tuesday, May 2 at the Japanese Friendship Garden, 1125 N. 3rd Ave in Phoenix. The event was part of the nationwide Asian Pacific Heritage Month celebration officially recognized in May. “The Arizona Department of Corrections is fortunate to have a vibrant group of corrections professionals of Asian Pacific heritage who play an important role in the success of our department,” Director Dora Schriro said. Asian Pacific American Heritage Week was first proclaimed in 1979. The holiday was expanded further in May 1990 to become a monthly celebration when President George H. W. Bush designated May to be Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. This year's national theme is "Freedom for All—A Nation We Call Our Own." Special guest speakers for the event included Arizona Department of Corrections Director Dora Schriro, Maricopa County Judge Rosa Mroz and Editor of the Asian Sun News Madelyn Ong-Sakata and Jeri Auther, staff attorney for the Governor’s Regulatory Review Council. Cara Liu, a news reporter from KPHO Channel 5, the CBS affiliate in Phoenix, was the emcee of the ceremony. Ms. Liu is an active member of the Asian American Journalists Association, and speaks Mandarin Chinese. At the conclusion of the ceremony, Director Schriro presented several Dudley Do-Right Awards, which honors ADC Employees who are "caught doing right." |
