Correctional Officer Vincent Cannon killed
by former ADC Inmate

Correctional Officer II Vincent Cannon

ADC staff were saddened to learn Monday that CO II Vincent Cannon was killed during a New Year's Eve party.  Officer Cannon was fatally stabbed as he blocked the reentry of an assailant who had crashed the party and then stabbed the host.

According to Maricopa County Sheriff's Department spokesperson, Lisa Allen, Officer Cannon was attending a New Year's Eve party at a home in rural Buckeye.  Around midnight former ADC inmate Jeremiah Sturmer initiated a discussion about tattoos with several people.  Sturmer had been incarcerated from 2000-2002 on drug violation and criminal property damage charges.

The conversation became heated, and a fight broke out during which Sturmer stabbed three people inside the home.  Sturmer then exited the residence and stabbed Officer Cannon as he tried to block Sturmer's reentry to the home.  Officer Cannon died of his injuries shortly thereafter at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.  The other three victims' injuries were not life threatening.

Officer Cannon, age 26, had been an employee of ADC since December 2003, and was most recently assigned to ASPC-Lewis, Morey Unit.  He is survived by his fiancé and his mother who lives in the Prescott area.

ADC Director, Dora Schriro, stated in an email to staff, "CO Cannon served with distinction at ASPC-Lewis throughout his employment with ADC starting in 2003. In addition to performing his post duties with excellence, Officer Cannon was a member of the complex's TSU. Vincent was also a volunteer with the Buckeye fire department."

According to Ivan Bartos, Warden of ASPC-Lewis, the below photos of Officer Cannon participating in last year's TSU Fire Truck Pull Fundraiser are "a nice representation of his dedication, team-spiritedness, and commitment to his coworkers."
