ADC Mourns the Death of COII Vincent Cannon

A TSU Officer from Cannon's Unit prepares for the procession to the funeral site

They came by the hundreds to pay their respects.  Law enforcement and emergency response professionals from throughout Arizona joined together Sunday, January 8, to mourn the loss of a man whose life was suddenly cut short at a New Year's Eve party last week.  Represented agencies included the Arizona Department of Corrections, Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections, Buckeye Valley Volunteer Firefighters, Arizona Border Patrol, and the Buckeye Police Department.

Officer Vincent Cannon, 26, was stabbed and killed just after midnight on January 1st, leaving friends and family members stunned and grieving.  According to Sheriff's investigators the assailant also stabbed two other people at the party.

Officer Cannon was loved and respected in his hometown, the tightly-knit community of Buckeye Valley, Arizona, as well as among his colleagues and friends at ASPC-Lewis where he served at the Morey Unit and with TSU.

"He loved DOC so much. He was very active in a lot of different aspects with the TSU.  He was our team medic," said ADC Lt. Danny Valenzuela, who was a personal friend of Officer Cannon as well as Cannon's direct supervisor at ASPC-Lewis.  "Thank you for giving us Vince. Now we all have a guardian angel."

Sunday's ceremony began with a procession which included Honor Guard members from various agencies, followed by a Buckeye Valley Fire Engine, shrouded in black, which carried Officer Cannon's coffin to the site of the services.

The ceremony included a 21-gun salute and a helicopter flyover in missing-man formation.  The agencies participating in the flyover were the Department of Public Safety Rangers, Air Evac Services and Native Air Ambulance.  At the conclusion of the ceremony, a traditional final radio call was made for Officer Cannon.

Indeed Officer Cannon will be deeply missed by the members of his ADC family, and the many more people whose lives he touched.

"We stand in sorrow with the Cannon family and their friends," ADC Director Dora Schriro said.  "We remember and we celebrate our co-worker, Vincent Robert Cannon, an exceptional correctional professional."
