Official: Prison budget not enough

A Republican budget proposal unveiled Thursday would leave the state prison system without the money needed to keep corrections officers from leaving for higher paying jobs, Arizona’s top prison official said Friday.

Arizona Department of Corrections Director Dora Schriro said the Republican’s plan to give the department $9.6 million for pay raises is woefully inadequate. Gov. Janet Napolitano, a democrat, and the department had sought $39 million to boost base salaries for corrections officers to $34,600 per year from $29, 851 per year.

Schriro said the prison system needs the money to retain officers and begin filling positions, given the 22 percent vacancy rate.
