ADC Hires Crisis Intervention Expert

The Arizona Department of Corrections has hired Viki Sharp to revamp and lead its Critical Incident Response Teams.

Sharp, a victim advocate for the last 28 years, is helping ADC better its responses to critical incidents. She has already begun revising the Department’s critical incident procedure manuals, and providing crisis intervention training to ADC employees.

“The Department is creating model Critical Incident Response Teams to better assist, support and connect folks,” said Sharp, employee assistance programs administrator. “Corrections is a tough business, we need to take better care of each other.”

ADC is hosting three-day, basic crisis intervention training seminars for employees. The training dates are April 27-29 at the Correctional Officer Training Academy in Tucson; May 16-18 at COTA; May 31-June 2 at COTA; June 28-30 in Phoenix and September 6-8 at COTA. The training includes courses in crisis intervention, communication, victim services, family violence, addictions, assessing suicidal tendencies, sexual assault, child trauma and death notification.

“All employees are welcome to take the training to enhance their skills in this arena. They can register through their training officers. Following the training, those who are interested may apply to be part of the Critical Incident Response Team,” said Sharp.

Sharp began as a crisis intervention volunteer in 1976 for the Pima County Attorney’s Victim Witness Program. She joined the staff as a volunteer coordinator in 1984, and was appointed program director in 1985.  During her tenure as the Director of the Pima County Attorney’s Victim Witness Program, Sharp led the program to international acclaim.
