As part of National Crime Victims’ Rights week, Arizona Department of Corrections Director Dora Schriro presented checks Monday, April 11, to three victims’ rights organizations that serve victims of domestic violence, sex crimes and child abuse.

Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Arizona Child and Family Advocacy Center Network, and Arizona Sexual Assault Network all received checks totaling nearly $43,500. The amount is a new record, more than doubling the previous high total from last year.

“In word and deed, inmates are taking more responsibility for their criminal conduct,” Director Dora Schriro said. “Staff has done a phenomenal job of raising their awareness and helping them collect these funds.”

Inmates and employees from the Arizona Department of Corrections voluntarily raised funds by a variety of ways including, holding raffles and participating in sports tournaments.

The Director also presented each group with a poster to mark crime victims' rights week. The artist who designed the poster is an inmate from ASPC-Yuma

National Crime Victims’ Week is an annual event that commemorates crime victims. Even though National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is April 10-16, the Arizona Department of Corrections has activities planned for the entire month of April, including establishing a victims’ rights monument at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Safford.
