Seventh Annual National Day of Remembrance

Young family members of murder victims

On September 23, a special flag raising ceremony honoring murder victims' and their families took place at the Governor's Executive Tower.

ADC Director Dora Schriro was the keynote speaker at the ceremony, and Dan Levey, the Governor's Advisor for Victims,  officiated.

Dennis Burke, Governor Napolitano's Chief of Staff presented awards to homicide investigators and prosecutors.  The plaques that were awarded were made by ADC inmates.

"Murder is not something that happens 'to someone else.' It is touches us, shakes our communities, and takes away our loved ones," Director Schriro said.  "The National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims is our opportunity to reflect and to remember those we lost and those who struggle as homicide survivors."

Speakers and award recipients included Ed Cook, the Executive Director of the Arizona Prosecutors Advisory Counsel, Marna McLendon, the Director of the Arizona Attorney General's Victim Services office, Beckie Miller, chapter leader for the Valley of the Sun Parents of Murdered Children, and Chuck Heeman, Executive Director of Mother's Against Drunk Driving of Arizona.

Over 16,000 people were murdered in America last year.  The National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims seeks to generate awareness among Americans about the devastating impact of murder on individuals, families, communities and our nation as a whole.
