ADC inmates housed at Phoenix West, a contract bed facility, refurbished 13 old bicycles for students at Alfred F. Garcia Elementary School in Phoenix. During a student recognition ceremony, school administrators gave the bikes to children with perfect or near perfect attendance.

“Our bike program is a great example of Director Dora Schriro’s Restorative Justice program. These inmates are learning a skill while giving back to the community, and they do this on a volunteer basis,” said Associate Deputy Warden Lacy Scott who serves as ADC’s monitor at Phoenix West.

Restorative Justice is part of Director Schriro’s “Parallel Universe,” which says life inside prison should resemble life outside prison and that inmates acquire values, habits and skills that will help them become productive, law-abiding citizens. Her plan calls for inmates to work, contribute to the restitution of their victims and participate in basic educational and work-based training.

Phoenix West is a low-custody private prison on contract with the Arizona Department of Corrections that provides custody and treatment for 400 adult male offenders convicted of felony Driving while Under the Influence. It is managed by Correctional Services Corporation.
