ADC Librarian Receives Outreach Award

The Little Chapel of All Nations in Tucson selected Elizabeth Miner, Librarian I at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Winslow as their librarian of the year. Miner, the first prison librarian to receive the award, was selected for her exemplary outreach services to minority populations.

Jennie O'Leary, coordinator of Library Services for the Arizona Department of Corrections, said, “I’m pleased and excited that Beth was selected to receive this award.  Because of our population and security constraints, providing library materials and services in a prison setting presents unique challenges.  While all the librarians who work for ADC do an outstanding job to meet and overcome these challenges, I felt that Beth deserved to be recognized for her exceptional contributions to the Department and her unit.”

Miner has worked for the Arizona Department of Corrections since October 1998.  She worked as a librarian at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Eyman in Florence. In May 2002, Miner transferred to the Arizona State Prison Complex-Winslow Apache Unit.

“When Beth took over the Apache Unit library, it had been without a librarian for almost a year and the library and its collection were in bad shape.  She has reorganized the library and rebuilt the collection through purchases and donations, said O'Leary."

Miner was responsible for developing an innovative grant program that raises community awareness of crime victims and the services available to them. The grant provides funds to county, public and institutional libraries who help victims of crime.
