GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS JANUARY STALKING AWARENESS MONTH
Arizona Among First Three States to Recognize Month

PHOENIX - Governor Janet Napolitano has proclaimed January "Stalking
Awareness Month" in Arizona, hoping to raise awareness of the crime that
affects 1 of every 12 women during her lifetime. The Governor's proclamation
makes Arizona one of the first three states in the nation to recognize the
month.

"With this proclamation, I call on Arizonans to learn more about the
dangerous and under-reported affects of stalking," Napolitano said. "Let
this be an opportunity for all of us to raise our collective awareness of
the issue and for stalking victims to better understand resources available
to them."

Stalking became a crime in Arizona in 1998. Since then, anti-stalking
legislation has been enacted in all 50 states including the District of
Columbia. Nearly 1.4 million Americans are victimized by stalkers every
year. One of every 45 men will also be stalked during their lifetimes.

The Governor's proclamation was read by Dan Levey, the Governor's adviser
for victims, Tuesday at the Stalking Awareness Month Event outside the House
of Representatives.
