Today
is an important day.
Today we recognize the victims of stalking.
Stalking is often called the invisible crime but it is far from invisible to its
victims.
Today, we understand it better, too.
Stalking
is a crime.
Stalking is against the law in every state.
Stalking
is harmful and intrusive.
Circumstances compel stalking victims to search for personal safety. They
change jobs, lose their jobs, move; lose their home. And inadvertently, we
sometimes get in their way: When stalking victims move and purchase a new home,
the law requires that their new address is recorded on documents that appear on
public websites.
The
Arizona Department of Corrections supports an important legislative proposal to
assist victims of stalking and victims of domestic violence. Sen. Jim Waring is sponsoring SB1086 to protect victims of
stalking and domestic violence by keeping their personal addresses off public
websites.
The
bill reads in part:
A victim of domestic violence or stalking who is protected under an order of
protection or injunction against harassment may request that the general public
be prohibited from accessing the unique identifier and the recording date
contained in indexes of recorded instruments and may request the recorder to
prohibit access to that persons residential address and telephone number
contained in instruments or writings recorded by the county recorder and made
available on the internet.
Victims
of stalking and domestic violence deserve our support. Commemorating crime
victims today improves their lives and better protects the public. ADC is proud
to participate. Thank you for the
opportunity to participate and to support SB 1086.
