Arizona Department of Corrections Will the Hit the Streets to Support Special Olympics

Arizona Department of Corrections officers will join forces with other law enforcement agencies from across the state and participate in the 20th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, benefiting Special Olympics.

The first leg of the relay will begin May 1, from six different starting points across Arizona, and will conclude at the opening of the Special Olympic Summer Games on May 6, at Arizona State University. There, participants will pass the torch to a Special Olympic athlete who will light the Flame of Hope, which will remain lit throughout the games.

Employees from all 10 Arizona Department of Corrections facilities will raise funds by running, biking, and skating various lengths during the event.

In Tucson, officers from the ASPC-Tucson along with cadets from the Arizona Department of Corrections Training Academy will run in formation during their 6-mile leg. Joining them throughout the portion of their run will be Special Olympic athletes.

The correctional officers will also be part of relay teams in Douglas, Florence, Safford, Springerville, Superior, Winslow, Yuma and Phoenix.

In recent years, the Arizona Department of Corrections has raised more money during this event than any other Arizona state law enforcement agency. Last year, ADC participants raised $59,476 dollars for the charity. The money raised this year will be used to fund year-round sports training and competitions for more than 7,000 Arizona Citizens with intellectual disabilities.
