ASPC-Douglas: The 2005 TSU Champions |
Douglas Wins TSU Competition
In the end, veteran leadership was the deciding factor for
Arizona State Prison Complex-Douglas’ Tactical Support Unit.
Douglas’ TSU edged out nine tactical teams from other prison complexes in a
series of sharp shooting and agility contests at the 15th annual TSU
competition. The competition was held on April 16 at the ASPC-Tucson firing
range.
“It came down to the wire, any of five teams could have won this year,” said
Emergency Preparedness Administrator Ernest Trujillo. “But in the end, it was
Douglas’ experience that proved to be too much.”
A surprising result was ASPC-Lewis' strong finish. Lewis’ TSU went from last in
2004 to almost winning the 2005 contest. According to Trujillo, Lewis’ unity and
motivation was a key ingredient to their success.
“The competition was intense but at the same time teams cheered for one
another,” said Trujillo. “The TSU competition has proven to be invaluable in
fostering good communication between tactical teams, building teamwork and
esprit-de-corps and sharing techniques and best practices.”
ADC Tactical Support Units are utilized in such activities as crowd control and
dispersal, building and area recovery, hostage recovery, tactical evacuation,
tactical containment of inmates, mass inmate movement and special missions as
ordered by the complex warden or designee.
“Tactical teams play a vital role in helping restore prisons to normal
operations following critical incidents. The Lewis hostage incident was a
reminder of how important tactical support teams are to an institution,” said
Deputy Director Gary Phelps.
