INMATES RAISE MONEY FOR VICTIMS

Inmates are paying back their debt to the people who need their help the most: crime victims.

As part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, inmates and employees from the Arizona Department of Corrections raised almost $43,000 for victims of crime doubling last year’s total.

On Monday, April 11 at the State Capitol, Director Dora Schriro will present funds that the department raised to each of three statewide victims’ rights organizations that serve victims of domestic violence: Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Arizona Child and Family Advocacy Center Network and Arizona Sexual Assault Network.

The presentation will take place on the Senate Lawn at1700 W. Washington St. at 12 p.m. In attendance will be crime victims, victims’ rights organizations, Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton, Department of Corrections Director Dora Schriro and the Governor's Chief of Staff Dennis Burke.

“In word and deed, inmates are taking more responsibility for their criminal conduct. Staff has done a phenomenal job of raising their awareness and helping them collect these funds, ” said Director Dora Schriro.

National Crime Victims' Rights Week is an annual commemoration of crime victims during the month of April. The Arizona Department of Corrections plans activities throughout the state to memorialize this important week.

“Crime victims rights week is an opportunity for us as a community, state and nation to recognize those who have been victimized by crime and more importantly it lets victims of crime see we have not forgotten them,” said Dan Levey, Governor Janet Napolitano’s advisor to victims.

National Crime Victims' Rights Week is April 10-16.
