DEFINITIONS

PURPOSE

The Employee Handbook provides employees with a concise reference of rules and the Department's written instructions that affect an employee's duties and responsibilities. This Department Order assigns responsibility and establishes the methods for development, revision, and distribution of the Employee Handbook.

PROCEDURES

511.01 EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK

1.1 Employee Responsibilities - Employees shall:

1.1.1 Complete and sign the Employee Handbook Receipt (receipt form), Form 70203001, upon receiving a handbook.

1.1.2 Read, understand and comply with the guidelines contained in the Employee Handbook.

1.2 Employee Handbook Review/Revisions - The Assistant Director for Human Resources/Development shall ensure that the Handbook is reviewed every two years and, if necessary, updated/revised.

1.3 Distribution

1.3.1 The Personnel Services Bureau (for Central Office employees) and Personnel Liaisons (for field employees) shall:

1.3.1.1 Ensure each new employee receives a copy of the Employee Handbook.

1.3.1.2 Ensure each employee receiving a copy of the handbook completes and signs an Employee Handbook Receipt.

1.3.1.3 Date and sign, as a witness, the completed receipt form.

1.3.1.4 Ensure that one copy of the completed receipt form is filed in the employee's Institution/Bureau Personnel File.

1.3.1.5 Maintain a sufficient supply of Employee Handbooks.

1.3.2 Personnel Liaisons shall forward the original of the completed receipt form to the Personnel Services Bureau for inclusion in the employee's Central Office Personnel File.

511.02 CORRECTIONAL OFFICER HANDBOOK - Issuance of this handbook has been suspended pending a review by Human Resources/Development Division. (See IMPLEMENTATION.)

IMPLEMENTATION

Six months (180 days) from the effective date of this Department Order, the Assistant Director for Human Resources/Development shall conduct an evaluation of the Correctional Officer Handbook, to include need, usefulness, and cost, and shall provide the Director with a recommendation to either reactivate or permanently eliminate the Handbook.

DEFINITIONS

CORRECTIONAL OFFICER HANDBOOK - A set of Department Orders, identified by the Director and issued to uniformed officers, that are critical to successful performance of their duties.
