Dora B. Schriro
Dora Schriro was appointed Director of the
Arizona Department of Corrections by Governor Janet Napolitano on June 13, 2003.
Dr. Schriro has more
than 25 years of corrections experience and during which time is the only woman
to lead two state correctional systems, the Missouri Department of Corrections
and the Arizona Department of Corrections. Prior to her appointment as
Director in Arizona, Dr. Schriro also served as Correctional Superintendent and
then Commissioner of the St. Louis (Missouri) City Corrections System as well as
Assistant Commissioner in the New York City Department of Corrections.
Director Schriro earned a Juris Doctorate from
St. Louis University in 2002, a Doctorate from Columbia University in 1983, a
Master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts-Boston in 1976, and a
Bachelor of Arts cum laude from Northeastern University in 1974. She has taught
law and criminal justice graduate courses as adjunct faculty throughout her
career.
Her work has been recognized by her peers who
named her top Corrections Director in 1999 and her efforts have brought
distinction to the field earning four Innovations in American Government awards
from the JFK School of Government and three Innovations awards from the Council
of State and Local Government. Dr. Schriro was recognized by the National
Governors’ Association in August 2006 with its Distinguished Service Award.
