STRENGTHENING FAMILIES is a new approach to treating addiction within
the Department of Corrections because it places special emphasis on reentry
and family reunification during and after treatment. It is based on a Stages
of Change mode which recognizes the participant’s continuum of awareness,
motivation, and readiness to take positive action. With this in mind, the
program consists of the following four phases, each addressing specific
treatment concerns while preparing participants for a successful transition
to the community.
PHASE 1 - SELF-AWARENESS (prepares participant for treatment). This
program incorporates a unique pre-treatment self-awareness stage that readies
the participant for the formal structured substance abuse treatment. The
first stage of the program, that lasts approximately six weeks, readies
the participant to look inward and start taking responsibility for who
they are and what they have done. This is also time for group bonding
and learning to trust the group process and accountability.
PHASE II - ADDICTIONS TREATMENT (delivers Substance Abuse Treatment
in conjunction with family unification activities) is a thirty-two,
128 hour, gender specific treatment component delivered by specially trained
certified substance abuse therapists. This program is cognitive-based
treatment curriculum that uses a woman-centered approach. Besides attending
weekly treatment sessions, Offenders will be working, attending school,
and participating in a family education program that includes family
reintegration labs. This allows families to start the healing process and
learn communication skills to enhance family unity prior to the Offender
returning home. This program is designed to include linkages to the Girl
Scouts Beyond Bars and other community resources such as Fresh Start,
part of the Women’s Resource Center.
PHASE III - PRE-RELEASE PLANNING (continues family reunification
activities provides relapse prevention and initiates pre-release planning)
ensures that gains made during in-prison treatment continue upon release,
an aftercare component is essential. The coordination between the correctional
treatment program and other human services and rehabilitation programs,
however, should occur prior to release. To ensure a smooth transition to
the community the program will have an on-site case manager working with
the Offender. This phase will begin two months before the Offender’s release date.
PHASE IV - AFTER CARE AND CASE MANAGEMENT (delivers after-care services
with structured case management) phase begins when the Offender is
released from prison. Long-term relapse management programs and after-care
will be negotiated with a provider as funds become available. The program
offers thirty day transition housing for the Offender.
PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY - The program has an enrollment of ninety-six
Offenders housed within a medium security unit at Arizona State Prison
Complex-Perryville Santa Maria Unit. Since it is a voluntary program Offenders
must complete and submit an application and be within 12-15 months of release.
