What is the Law Enforcement Torch Run

The Law Enforcement Torch Run© is Special Olympics' single largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness effort. More than 85,000 law enforcement officers carried the "Flame of Hope" around the United States and 35 nations, and raised awareness and funds for Special Olympics. The Torch Run is a running event where law enforcement personnel and athletes carry the Special Olympics "Flame of Hope" to the Opening Ceremonies of Summer or Winter Games in their home state. In addition to the Torch Run relay, fundraising efforts also include merchandise sales, corporate donations, and special events such as Polar Plunges, golf tournaments or other events that have local appeal. .

Arizona Department of Corrections Law Enforcement Torch Run

Arizona Department of Correctional officers will join forces with other law enforcement agencies from across the state and participate in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, benefiting Special Olympics. The first leg of the relay will begin the last week of April, from six different starting points across Arizona, and will conclude at the opening of the Special Olympic Summer Games at Mesa Community College. There, participants will pass the torch to a Special Olympic athlete, who will light the Flame of Hope, which will remain lit throughout the games. Employees from all 10 Arizona Department of Corrections facilities will be part of relay teams in Douglas, Florence, Safford, Springerville, Superior, Winslow, Yuma and Phoenix. During the course of the Torch Run campaign, employees collect contributions from individuals and businesses, ask service groups and schools to raise funds on our behalf and raise money through special events such as "Tip a Cop", golf tournaments, polar plunges, and fire truck pulls.
