The Arizona Department of Corrections' Tuition Assistance Policy (DO 509) provides 80% tuition assistance to full-time employees BEFORE classes start - if you get your paperwork in on time.  If you need some assistance, this is how you begin:

1. If you are returning to school:

Contact the Office of the Registrar of the college(s) where you have taken courses and request

  • an official transcript be sent to the college you will be attending;

  • an unofficial transcript be sent to you.

You will have to pay for each of those copies - average cost is approximately $5 for official plus $1 for each additional. Unofficial transcripts are usually free if you pick them up.

2. Whether you are returning or a new student:

Call your local college or university and ask to speak with an advisor

  • Make an appointment

  • Discuss your professional career path.  Choose a program of study consistent with DO 509.10 Policy.  Find the class(es).

3. If you are returning, a new student or a continuing student:

Register.

  • Stop by the Office of Financial Aid to see if you qualify for any assistance (Remember to report any assistance, including Veteran's benefits, on your ADC assistance application.)

  • If you register early enough, you will receive a bill.  Bring the bill back to your work place and attach it to the ADC Employee Educational Assistance form 509-16p.

  • Hand carry the completed form (with attached bill and course description) to your first-line supervisor to begin the approval process.  According to DO 509.10, dated January 31, 2000 supervisors recommend approval/disapproval and forward the application to the next approval level within five work days of receipt.

  • Arizona's fine colleges and universities are prepared to greet you and make your entry or re-entry as easy as possible.  The Department encourages you to take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity to advance your own career as we advance the profession of Corrections.

Pursuing a college degree can now bring financial as well as personal rewards. Some job classes qualify for educational stipends in the amounts of 2.5% for an Associates Degree; 5% for a Bachelor's Degree; and 7.5% for a Master's Degree . Qualifying degrees are in the areas of Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Public Administration, Psychology, and Sociology. Job classes eligible for an educational stipend are: CO III, CO IV, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Parole Officer, and Parole Supervisor.
