ADC Wins Coveted Award
Phoenix, Ariz. – The Arizona Department of Corrections’ entry in the Phoenix Veteran’s Day parade takes the top prize. The float ‘ADC Staff Serving Our Country and State with Distinction’ won the Ben Jefferson Pride award at the 11th annual Phoenix Veterans Day Parade and placed second in the non-profit float category.
The award, named after the first Veterans Day Parade Chairman Ben Jefferson, is presented to the entry that most exemplifies the spirit of patriotism, spirit of cooperation in the parade itself, and the spirit of honoring veterans.
“Our float was made possible by ADC staff and inmates at ASPC-Lewis, many of them veterans, who designed and built it. We are proud of our staff who wear the uniforms of the Armed Forces and ADC with honor and distinction. This award is for them.” said Dora Schriro, Arizona Department of Corrections Director.
Military veterans make up 25 percent of the entire ADC staff, while another 89 ADC staff are currently serving the country over seas and another 73 are ready for deployment when needed.
This is the third year in a row that the department has entered a float in the Veterans Day parade and in each of these three years has been recognized. In 2005 the department received the third place trophy and last year, the ADC’s float, ‘Champions of Freedom’ placed first.
ADC staff who are veterans will ride this float in the ‘APS Electric Light Parade’ this weekend in Phoenix.
