ADC participates in 2008 Phoenix Veterans Day Parade
November 18, 2008
For the fourth year in a row, the Arizona Department of Corrections remembers those men and women who have served their country as members of the armed services by entering a float in the annual Phoenix Veterans Day Parade.
ADC staff who were instrumental in getting the float constructed included Lt. Randy Standridge, Rio Salado instructor Ray Hixon, Sgt. John Littlejohn, Sgt. Eric Albert, COII Vince Viscarra and Internal Communications Coordinator Virginia Strankman.
The float built by ASPC-Lewis/Barchey unit inmates, who are also military veterans, created a tribute to military service. The back of the float displays 123 gold stars, one star each for the men and women from Arizona who have served and died in Operation Enduring Freedom.
This year’s float participants included Director Dora Schriro, Sgt. Jay Darby, CO II Corissa Burnside, CO II Luciano Contreras, CO II Gary Hodge, Lt. Rodrick Williams, CO II Barnavus Bustillos, CO IV Angela Basurto, ITS II Crystal Vasquez and members of the ASPC-Tucson and Eyman Honor Guard.
In 2007, the Department was awarded the Ben Jefferson Pride Award, an award exemplifying the spirit of patriotism, spirit of cooperation in the parade itself, and the spirit of honoring veterans.
