ADC float wins top APS award December 22, 2008 The Arizona Department of Corrections award winning Veteran’s Day Parade float is recognized by the “APS Fiesta of Light Electric Light Parade”, winning one of two coveted awards. On Saturday, November 6 our float participated in the 22nd annual holiday parade and won “The APS Award – The power to make it happen.” This award was given for the best use of lights and there were plenty. Staff and inmates at ASPC-Lewis installed over 35,000 lights on the float and another 5,000 lights decorated the truck towing the float. The judges especially liked the way the lights were used to highlight the rendition of the waving flag on the float. The ADC thanks Home Depot Equipment Rentals in Tempe for their kind donation of two generators used to power the lights on the float and Sgt Daniel Gutierrez, ASPC-Lewis/Barchey unit, who loaned one more generator to light up the truck. Lt. Randy Standridge, also from Barchey, piloted the float down the 2.5-mile parade route. The float received a big “thumbs up” from police and fire personnel who visited the staging area before the parade and several spectators who posed by the float for pictures. During the parade, the float received an enthusiastic response from over 200,000 people who attended the popular holiday celebration.
