Arizona Department of Corrections participates
in annual Law Enforcement Torch Run

May 21, 2009

Hundreds of ADC officers and staff from around Arizona took part in the 2009 Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics Arizona.   The Olympic Torch for the athletic event was carried by the men and women from the Department from all 10 prisons, eventually making its way to the opening ceremony event at Mesa Community College.

On May 1, CO III Barbara Lancaster from ASPC-Perryville, the top LETR fundraiser in 2008, shared the honor of carrying the Torch around the track with ADC Director Charles L. Ryan before joining athlete Ronald Allen in lighting the caldron to kick off the Special Olympics Summer Games.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest fundraiser for Special Olympics in the world.   The Arizona Department of Corrections was the leading law enforcement agency contributor in Arizona last year, raising $83,773.
