ADC officers receive ICE Credentials
June 1, 2009 Nine Arizona Department of Corrections officers received credentials from Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) officials Monday, June 1, 2009. These officers are among the first non-Homeland Security personnel in the nation to receive credentials as ICE officers, certified to carry out the duties of the 287(g) memorandum. Jon Gurule, Assistant Field Office Director with ICE, and ADC Director Charles L. Ryan were on hand to present each officer their credentials. In 2005 ADC became the country’s first correctional organization to enter into a memorandum of understanding with ICE to expedite the deportation of eligible undocumented alien inmates. These nine ADC staff identify criminal aliens eligible for deportation upon arrival at the intake and reception centers. Determining the eligibility during intake makes the information available for classification purposes and expedites the process for the eligible criminal aliens. ADC’s two intake centers with ADC staff assigned are located at ASPC-Phoenix and ASPC-Perryville.
