On March 6, Special Olympics Arizona and the Arizona Law Enforcement Torch Run hosted the Phoenix Polar Plunge Superhero Challenge at Golfland Sunsplash in Mesa. Superheroes from all walks of life, including Special Olympics athletes, ADC staff, law enforcement officers, families, friends and fans, plunged down the “Bonzi Speed Slides” into an ice filled pool to support Special Olympics Arizona!
Representing the Department of Corrections were Lt. Patricia M. Cruz, ASPC-Safford/Tonto Unit, who came as her Super Hero alter ego “THE SUPER TEAPOT.” Also on hand was CO II John Risch, ASPC-Florence/Complex Mail Room, who appeared as "LETR MAN."
The Phoenix Polar Plunge raised about $8,000 and more donations are being received.
LETR MAN (aka CO II John Risch, ASPC-Florence/Complex Mail Room) and THE SUPER TEAPOT (aka Lt. Patricia M. Cruz, ASPC-Safford/Tonto Unit) were on hand to represent the ADC in the Phoenix Polar Plunge.
CO II Risch won first place for his Superhero costume, LETR Man.
WONDER WOMAN (aka Kevin Albert, Paradise Valley PD Motor Officer and AZ LETR State Director) and SUPERGIRL (aka Ruth G. Sanchez, Director of LETR Program, Special Olympics Arizona) present Lt. Cruz with a 2nd place award for "Individual Fundraiser." Lt. Cruz raised $691 for her dip in the chilly waters.
