March 25, 2010

From left: From left, Green Girl (aka Gabi Gonzales), The Lucky Leprechaun, (aka AA III Danielle Hallahan), Surfer Boy, Farmer Girl (aka CCO Lisbet Jones), Superman (aka CO III Benjamin Brookhart), Military Man (aka CO IV Steve Utter), Polar Plunge Bear, The Phoenix (aka CO II Maggie Sammons), Batgirl, Spiderman (aka Northwest Tucson Athlete Matt Sheilds) and CO III Wendy Eccles

It was a brisk Feb. 27 when Arizona Special Olympics athletes, families, friends and fans met at Breakers Water Park in Marana to take the daring plunge into the freezing cold water, all to support Special Olympics Arizona!

Nearly 100 plungers took part in the event, raising over $26,000.  Proceeds from the Polar Plunge support year-round sports training and competition for over 11,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities throughout the state of Arizona.

Staff with the Arizona Department of Corrections showed their support for the Polar Plunge Superhero Challenge, coming as their favorite, and sometimes obscure, superheros.  Team ADC included The Lucky Lebrecahn (aka AA III Danielle Hallahan, ASPC-Tucson/Central Office); Farm Girl (aka CCO Lisbet Jones, Tucson Community Corrections); Military Man (aka CO IV Steve Utter, ASPC-Tucson/Minors); Superman (aka CO III Benjamin Brookhart, ASPC-Tucson/Rincon) and The Phoenix (aka CO II Maggie Sammons, ASPC-Tucson/Manzanita) were joined by Hulk Hogan (aka Jack Grady, Cochise County Court Security and Wonder Woman (aka Officer Tracy Grady, Sierra Vista Police), along with other family and friends, raising over $800 for the event.   Brookhart was the top ADC fundraiser for the Tucson Polar Plunge, collecting $419 for his icy swim.
