State Fair Public Safety Days Demo and Competition
December 22, 2011
For the second time in two years, the Arizona Department of Corrections Service Dog program has brought home top honors. CO II Armando Navarette and his dog Daro, from ASPC-Florence, earned the highest combined scores at the Canine Competition hosted by the Phoenix Police Department and won the Top Dog award. Last year the award went a team from ASPC-Safford. On Oct. 30, approximately 30 canine teams from around the state participated, including seven teams from ADC. ADC teams entered all three K-9 team events, including "Stress Tactical Obedience", "Narcotic Detection” and a “Handler Protection Exercise." Representing ASPC-Florence were CO II Armando Navarette and CO Jamie II Llamas and their dogs Daro and Diesel. Representing ASPC-Lewis were Sgt. Wayne Kudis and CO Robin II Teed and their dogs Ajis and Tank. Representing ASPC-Perryville were CO II Olga Payan and CO II Patrick O’Hearn and their dogs Canny and Brix. Representing ASPC-Tucson was CO II Frank Musitano and his dog Edo. Our officers and dogs swept the "Narcotic Detection Event." In 1st place were CO II O’Hearn and Brix, who were the only team to find all five of the hidden narcotic stashes. Second Place went to CO II Navarette and Daro, with four finds in a very good time and third place went to Sgt. Kudis and Ajis, who also had four finds in a very good time. Congratulations and a job well done to all the teams that participated!
