Work Programs
Safford

Industries (ACI) - harvesting tomatoes. Inmates work an
average of 6 hours per day, 5 days per week.
Graham
and Fort Grant Units have inmate workers assigned in food
service, building maintenance, transportation maintenance and
general labor crews for upkeep and maintenance of streets and
grounds, both on and off site. Work crews are sent out
daily to surrounding communities and for highway beautification
projects. Other work crews include a Wildland Fire Crew, a
Garden Crew, and a partnership through ACI and Eurofresh which
employs approximately 250 inmates.

Treatment Programs
At ASPC-Safford,
the Substance Abuse Program is a 24-week moderate treatment
course, "Living in Balance" that is currently being offered at
the Graham and Fort Grant Units. The weekly sessions are
facilitated by a licensed independent Substance Abuse Counselor.
Support groups of Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and
Smart Recovery are made available to inmates on a voluntary
basis; 12 Step volunteers from the community help support the AA
and NA meetings.
CO III staff help facilitate the following pre-release
preparedness programs: Thinking Straight, Cultural Diversity,
Impact of Crime on Victims, Pre-Release and Community
Corrections. These programs help inmates learn the skills
while incarcerated that will help them build more
effective and responsible lives on release.
All units offer medical, dental and nursing care
to meet the essential needs of inmates.
Religious Activities
Religious access for inmates at ASPC-Safford is
provided by three full-time Chaplains and more than 30 religious
volunteers. The Chaplains at each Unit, along with other
staff, work to provide access to worship, education, counseling,
support and crisis intervention to meet the needs of a diverse
inmate population. The Chaplains seek to provide or make
available weekly worship and/or study opportunities for all
inmates according to their religious preferences. Visits
from representatives from faiths not represented by Chaplains or
regular ADC religious volunteers are scheduled as available.
Safford Chaplaincy encourages religious
visitation between religious leaders and inmates. Inmates
may request or consent to individual pastoral visits with an
accredited minister or religious leader of their faith.
Chaplains also provide moral guidance and spiritual counseling
for inmates at their request. Each Chaplain provides
regular office hours to ensure inmate access in addressing their
religious concerns.
Religious materials are available for Safford
inmates at the Unit Libraries and Chaplain's Offices. A
limited number of instructional and inspirational audio
cassettes are available on loan from the Chaplain's Offices as
well. Other resources to facilitate inmates'
practice/exercise of their religion include self-study programs
for continuous religious education and/or advanced study,
including certificate programs and correspondence courses.
Each year, special religious events and programs
are provided at the units to supplement the regularly scheduled
opportunities for spiritual access and growth. Prison
Fellowship offers two two-day seminars a year in English and two
in Spanish at the units according to inmate population.
