Director Conducts "Brown Bag" Discussion

Director Schriro shares an overview of ADC's budget proposal to Central Office staff.

On Tuesday, February 1, Arizona Department of Corrections Director Dora Schriro held the second in a series of "Brown Bag" Discussions.  The topics included the Fiscal Year 2007 Executive Budget Proposal, recently approved pay raises for all state employees, and proposed pay raises for Correctional Officers.

Director Schriro discussed the state employee's pay increase (HB2661), which was approved by Governor Napolitano earlier this week.  Effective March 11, 2006, state employees will see an annual increase in their base pay of $1650.  An additional 2.5% of each employee's salary has also been approved, and will be applied in the form of merit increases.

Brown Bag attendees asked specific questions about possible pay raises.

Other legislation introduced includes HB2753, which seeks out an appropriation of funds to pay off balances owed on fiscal year 2006 items, including unpaid compensation time, and inmate healthcare.  Also introduced this week were SB1535 and HB2720, both of which seek an approximate  $39,000,000 increase in funds to use toward Correctional Officer pay raises.  If passed, Correctional Officers will receive an average pay raise of 16.13%, an amount Director Schriro stated was necessary to bring Arizona Correctional Officer pay up to a competitive salary level.

Future Brown Bag Discussions will be announced once the schedule is finalized.
