ADC Assists Local Law Enforcement during Immigration Rally

ADC Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Ernest Trujillo and Director Schriro conduct an end-of-day debriefing.

The Arizona Department of Corrections joined forces with other law enforcement agencies during the Immigration Rally on Monday, April 10, assuring the safety and security of state employees and property.

Fifteen sworn and non-sworn ADC special investigators worked with Capitol Police to secure the crowd at Wesley Bolin Plaza.  ADC also agreed to commit it's own staff to protect ADC personnel and property, allowing Capitol Police to dedicate more resources to patrolling the event and the capitol grounds.  Personnel from several divisions including Offender Operations, Occupation Health, Inspections and Investigations, and staff from area prisons all pitched in to monitor parking lots and garages and escort staff between buildings.

ADC's Emergency Operations Center was activated several hours before the start of the rally and continued operations until about 7 p.m. on Monday.  ADC Director Dora Schriro selected Emergency Preparedness Administrator, Ernest Trujillo to oversee the operations.  A plan was developed which established the command structure for the event.  This included assigning a Law Enforcement Liaison, Public Information Officer, Incident Safety Officer and General Command Officer specifically for the event.

"I'm quite pleased with the response and teamwork of ADC staff from several divisions not used to working together,"  Trujillo said.  "They created a safe environment and their low-key approach to managing this event helped to assure there would be no injuries or incidents."

The Immigration Rally attracted more than 100,000 people.  Thanks to the organization of local law enforcement and the added efforts of agencies such as ADC, the atmosphere of the rally remained peaceful, and the day ended without a single arrest.
