Work, Education and Treatment Programs

Work Programs

Safford Inmate workers participate in WIPP/Vocational, Arizona Correctional Industries (ACI) - harvesting tomatoes, Inter-Governmental Agreements (IGA) - working within the local communities. Fort Grant has inmate workers in food service, building maintenance, transportation maintenance and general labor crews for upkeep and maintenance of its streets and grounds. Tonto Unit inmates work only inside the Unit and does not participate in transportation maintenance. Work crews are sent out daily to surrounding communities and for highway beautification projects. Graham and Fort Grant Inmates work on-site and off-site. Other work crews include a Wildland Fire Crew, a Garden Crew, and a partnership through ACI and Eurofresh which employees approximately 290 inmates.


Inmates work an average of 6 hours per day, 5 days per week in all work areas.

 


Education Programs

 

Safford has the following educational programs available to the inmates: Adult Basic Education (ABE), Chapter I, English as a Second Language (ESL), General Educational Diploma (GED), Occupational/vocational training. Other educational programs include GED preparation, a mandated adult education program, English as a second language, and a Test Adult Basic Education (TABE) program that places students in the adult education program. Fort Grant offers 3 vocational training outlets in building trades, computer sciences, and refrigeration. Inmates get training under the supervision of Eastern Arizona College instructors 2 to 3 / 3 hour blocks a day.


 

Treatment Programs

At ASPC-Safford, Treatment Programs available are: Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Alcoholics Anonymous, Family counseling, The 12-Step Program, and Spanish Narcotics Anonymous. At Ft Grant after work-hour programs are available to inmates for self-improvement in Cognitive Restructuring, Conflict Resolution, Domestic Violence, Cultural Diversity. Evening hours offer more self-improvement and awareness with active AA and NA chapters in both English and Spanish.

Food Visitation is approved for inmates who have earned Phase II and Phase III. Inmates in Phase I are not authorized Food Visits and inmates in Phase II are only authorized those Food Visits specified by Department Order 809. Food Visits are conducted ant Fort Grant Unit, Graham Unit, and Tonto Unit; it is not available to inmates assigned to detention.

Due to space limitations, Food Visitation will be on the "First In, First Out" basis. Each visitor that arrives before 1200 hours will be authorized a minimum four (4) hour visit. If the visitation area reaches seating capacity, we will first ask for volunteers to leave and then require those who have visited for four (4) hours ("first in") to leave. This will ensure all eligible inmates are allowed the opportunity to participate in the food visit.

Visitation days are Saturday, Sunday, and State holidays. . Hours are from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. No visitors are accepted after 2:00 p.m. Visitation for detention inmates is Non-Contact and By Appointment - Only. Appointments can be scheduled through the visitation office, and must be made at least 24 hours in advance.


 Directions

From Phoenix to ASPC-Safford:

Take the Superstition Freeway ( Hwy 60 ) to the Globe exit. Head towards Globe (HWY #70) - stay on HWY #70 until you reach Safford. From the intersection of HWY #70 and HWY #191, it is approximately seven miles continuing east on HWY #70 to San Jose Road. Turn left. Follow the road until the pavement runs out and a sign will indicate the prison on the right.

From Tucson to ASPC-Safford:

Take Interstate 10 east to the Safford exit. At the exit turn left and proceed to Safford. From the intersection of HWY #70 and HWY #191 (this is the first traffic light you will come to), you will turn right. It is approximately seven miles continuing east on HWY #70 to San Jose Road. Turn left. Follow the road until the pavement runs out and a sign will indicate the prison on the right.

From Phoenix to ASPC-Safford/Fort Grant Unit:

Highway 60 east to Highway 70 east to 191 south to 266 west to Ft. Grant; or I-10 east to 191 north to 266 west to Ft. Grant; or I-10 east to exit 340, west on Ft. Grant Rd. to Ft. Grant (last 10 miles unpaved).

From Tucson to ASPC-Safford/Fort Grant Unit:

I-10 east to 191 north to 266 west to Ft. Grant; or
I-10 east to exit 340, west on Ft. Grant Rd. to Ft. Grant (last 10 miles unpaved). From Flagstaff to ASP-Ft Grant:

I-17 south to I-10 east to 191 north to 266 west to Ft. Grant; or
I-17 south to I-10 east to exit 340 west to Ft. Grant Rd. (last 10 miles unpaved); or
I-17 south to Highway 60 east to Highway 70 east to 191 south to 266 west to Ft. Grant (shortest route).
